Drone program funding and credentials in New Jersey

Part 107 isn’t on NJ’s Industry-Valued Credential list yet. How a drone course fits approved CTE programs and the 21st century life and careers credits, plus Perkins and NJDOE CTE grants.

Checked against official New Jersey and federal sources on October 18, 2026. Programs and deadlines change; every item links to its source.

Is Part 107 a state credential here?

Not on the state credential list

Not yet on NJ’s Industry-Valued Credential (IVC) list

Neither 2026 NJDOE Industry-Valued Credential list includes the FAA Remote Pilot Certificate or any drone credential.

An approved CTE Program of Study has to culminate in college credit, an industry-valued credential or enrollment in a registered apprenticeship. So today a drone course sits inside an approved program, such as engineering or aerospace technology, or runs as an elective.

A school district can nominate a credential through NJ Homeroom between April 1 and September 30, and must report NJ SMART data on an approved CTE Program of Study. NJDOE processes submissions October through December and the Credentials Review Board meets in January. Nominations need evidence from employers; the credential’s issuer can’t provide it.

Either way, the FAA Remote Pilot Certificate is a federal credential and what the FAA requires to fly a drone for work. Students must be 16 to hold it (14 CFR 107.61).

How a drone course fits

21st century life and careers credits

Every New Jersey student needs at least five credits in 21st century life and careers, or career-technical education, to graduate. Your district sets local graduation requirements, including which courses count.

NJSLS Computer Science and Design Thinking, standard 8.2

The grade 12 Design Thinking expectations include evaluating products against safety, reliability and cost constraints (8.2.12.ED.5), analyzing the ethics of technology (8.2.12.EC.1) and proposing innovations with their costs and risks (8.2.12.ITH.2). Part 107 work on operating limits, risk assessment, privacy and Remote ID maps to these. We’re preparing a crosswalk.

Program of Study approval

New, reapproval and change submissions for CTE Programs of Study open May through October in CTE-DMS. A drone component can be added to an existing approved program then.

Where the money can come from

Perkins V

New Jersey’s preliminary 2026-27 secondary Perkins allocations total about $16 million across 124 LEAs. The county vocational-technical districts receive the largest shares. Local applications were due June 30, 2026, for the year starting July 1.

NJDOE competitive CTE grants

Past rounds include the Elevate CTE Innovation Grant (2025-26, up to $50,000, not reposted), Elevating High-Quality Work-Based Learning (up to $15,000, $30,000 or $50,000; closed February 18, 2026) and AI Technology in CTE Pathways (up to $25,000; closed January 22, 2026). None is open now. Watch the NJDOE grants list for FY27 notices.

Federal sources that apply in every state, such as Title IV-A, are on the main funding page.
